In Maryland, Even Democrats Attacking Gay Families
Submitted by Log Cabin Republicans on Jan 12, 2012
WASHINGTON — Log Cabin Republicans statement on remarks by Maryland State Senate President Mike Miller calling marriage equality ‘an attack on families.’
“Democrat Maryland Senate President Mike Miller is trying to divert attention away from his anti-gay pandering by hiding behind certain conservative candidates, but the truth is he is badly out of step with Marylanders, including Republican State Senator Allan Kittleman, who voted in favor of marriage equality last year and continues to be a champion on this issue,” said R. Clarke Cooper, Executive Director of Log Cabin Republicans. “Between this and his attack on a transgender rights bill last session as also being ‘anti-family,’ it appears that Senator Miller has taken it upon himself to be the arbiter of what Maryland families deserve protecting. It is particularly frustrating to watch certain advocacy organizations, such as National Stonewall Democrats, let him get away with it again because of his partisan affiliation. Miller’s disrespect for LGBT Maryland families is backwards, and everyone should hold him accountable for it.”

Most Marylanders, like Senator Kittleman, support “mariage equality”. But, he and others should realize most of the emotional Brew-Ha-Ha on this issue stems from the use if the term “marriage”. The latter traditionally and legally refers to the partnership of one man and one woman. A marriage license is issued for this male-female union. Currently, Maryland, like 41 other states, bans “same-sex marriage”(Family Law Section 2-201. Most Marylanders, including those in Carroll County, still approve of this law. Hopefully, Senator Kittleman, as our elected representative realizes this. He should be smart enough to deal soley with the core issue: namely, the crafting and passage of a new State law that grants Maryland’s same-sex couples “legal rights and economic equality” identical to that of the State’s married male-female couples. This can be done by a bill that specifies “civil union” or “domestic partner” licensing. Most Marylander would welcome and support such a bill. The use of the term “marriage” in earler bills is what caused their defeat.
